Prior to joining the position of the founder Vice Chancellor of Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Sports University of Assam, Prof. J. P. Verma had an experience of over 38 years as a faculty at Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (Deemed University) Gwalior. Prof. Verma has served as I/c Vice Chancellor of LNIPE for about eleven months during 2014-15. He has also served the Institute in the capacity of Head, Department of Sport Psychology, Dean Students Welfare, Director, centre for Advanced Studies, Member Board of Management, OSD(Planning & Implementation) and Head, computer centre over various stints. Prof. Verma did his Ph.D in the area of sport genetics under the department of Mathematics of Jiwaji University in 1991. Prof. Verma also did Masters in Statistics, Psychology and Computer Application. He has a distinction of holding Ist position in MSc (Statistics) from Kanpur University and Ist position in MA (Psychology) from Jiwaji University, Gwalior.

He has published 45 research papers/articles in the area of sports, physical education and allied sciences in reputed international journals. His research resulted in a new academic discipline called “Sports Statistics” whose main objective is to bring rigor of research methodology in sports and physical education. Over the course of his academic carrier he has published eleven books by top publishers like Wiley, Springer, McGraw Hills. Many of these books have readership across the globe which led publishers in USA and Canada to publish it simultaneously. His books have been adopted by departments of many foreign universities as a part of their curriculum. He has also successfully supervised eleven Ph.D. students in physical education till date.

In 2018, Prof. Verma completed a major research project on talent identification in sports in the country, funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India with a grant of Rs. 35,30,000 (Thirty-five lakhs and thirty thousand only). With this knowhow, talent in four different sports namely Athletics, Basketball, Gymnastics and Wrestling can be detected at an early age (in 8 to 13 years), so that they can be trained for winning medals in international tournaments like Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Prof. Verma has a patent to his credit on FitnessWatch (A fitness assessment and management system for school children and youth in 7-20 years age category). Some details of the project can be seen here. This know-how was validated by the LNIPE with the grant of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India. He has acted as an expert for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), New Delhi, on various assignments. He was nominated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for various assignments like Chairman, Committee for evaluating sports infrastructure projects in colleges, UGC nominee on the Governing Body of H.V.P. Mandal’s Degree College of Physical Education and Chairman for granting autonomous status to the physical education college.

Prof. Verma was a visiting fellow in the University of Sydney in 2002. Post 2002, he developed a model research methods workshop using insights from the methods used by hard sciences and from his own research. This got great reception and led him to visit Japan, Bulgaria, Qatar, Australia, Poland and Scotland to conduct this workshop for faculty and research scholars of physical education and sport sciences. Prof. Verma’s schooling was done in Tezpur and Delhi and college education in Delhi and Kanpur. He is actively associated with the Ramakrishna Mission for accomplishing his social commitments towards underprivileged section of the society.
